Walking Tour: Downtown Yonge
No street is more iconically Toronto than Yonge Street.
First surveyed in the late 18th century to aid trade and settlement, Yonge has been both witness and protagonist in the story of Toronto’s development from a small colonial outpost to the multi-cultural city we see today. Busy, diverse, and slightly chaotic, its cacophonous nature is the legacy of over 200 years of urban development, with competing interests—entertainment, commerce, residential, education, and more—all looking to stake a claim on what has often been called Ontario’s Main Street.
Join us for a tour as we unpack this legacy through the buildings and landscapes of downtown Yonge. As we stroll down five of its most visited blocks—from Queen to College—we’ll reveal this street’s many lives through its surrounding spaces: from fragments of a now-lost 1800s neighbourhood, to the high- and low-brow entertainment venues that made Yonge synonymous with fun. Not to mention the currently sprouting supertalls making the most of their recognizable Yonge Street addresses. From landmark structures to hidden gems, architectural giants to small public art pieces, this tour along Yonge is as diverse and storied as the street itself!
Logistics
All TSA Walking Tours require prior registration. You can register online anytime prior to the start of the tour. Walk-ins will be accommodated pending tour capacity.
This tour is 2 hours long and includes mostly exterior stops. Your tour guide will be equipped with a microphone and speaker system to ensure you’re able to hear the tour clearly and we’ll find places to sit in the shade whenever possible.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the tour begins for your tour guide to check you in. We encourage you to go paperless — we can use either your digital ticket or your name for check-in.
Our tours take place rain or shine, so please double check the weather on the day of your tour and dress appropriately. Should inclement weather require tour cancellation, we will reach out in advance of the tour to the email/phone number you shared when registering.
